Fertility Advice

At Bondi Doctors we specialise in all aspects of women’s health including reproductive health and fertility.

Seeking fertility advice

About 10 -15% of couples will seek advice regarding fertility. Your general practitioner can help you to understand the variety of lifestyle and health factors that effect fertility in women and men.

In a third of infertility cases there is a female factor, in another third a male factor and in the remaining third there will be a combination of both, or no detected cause.

The steps to explore infertility will vary depending on the couple's history, their ages and the findings on clinical examination.

Education

Your general practitioner has an important role to help couples understand the factors that can effect conception, such as:

  • Facts about the menstrual cycle

  • The fertile window: how to know when you ovulate

  • The importance of vitamins and minerals including: folic acid, Vitamin D, iodine, Zinc and Selenium

  • Healthy weight and reproductive outcomes

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (more information available here)

  • The effects of lifestyle factors such as alcohol, smoking and caffeine on reproduction outcomes

  • Preconception health for fathers

Female infertility

Your general practitioner will consider a variety of factors which may include:

  • A detailed history of your menstrual cycle

  • Hypothyroidism

  • Hormone levels

  • Early menopause

Male infertility

Your general practitioner will consider a variety of factors which may include semen analysis.
